Spotting an Emergency

Recognizing the signs of an emergency can make all the difference in your pet’s outcome. While some symptoms may be obvious, others can be more subtle. Here are some key indicators that your pet may be experiencing a medical emergency:

  • Difficulty Breathing: If your pet is struggling to breathe, has shallow or rapid breathing, or is coughing up blood, immediate medical attention is required.
  • Severe Vomiting or Diarrhea: Persistent vomiting or diarrhea, especially if it is accompanied by blood, can lead to dehydration and other serious complications.
  • Trauma or Injury: Any incident involving trauma, such as being hit by a car, falling from a height, or a serious bite wound, should be treated as an emergency, even if your pet seems fine initially.
  • Ingestion of Toxic Substances: If your pet ingests something toxic, such as chocolate, medications, or household chemicals, contact us immediately. Time is critical in these situations.
  • Seizures or Collapse: If your pet experiences a seizure, sudden collapse, or loses consciousness, they need urgent care right away.
  • Difficulty Urinating: Straining to urinate, especially in male cats, can indicate a blockage and requires prompt medical intervention.
  • Swollen Abdomen: A bloated or swollen abdomen, especially if it is hard to the touch, may indicate a life-threatening condition like bloat, which requires immediate care.
  • Sudden Behavioral Changes: Extreme lethargy, disorientation, or sudden aggression can be signs of a serious underlying condition.

If you observe any of these signs, it’s crucial to act quickly. Your pet’s health and safety depend on prompt recognition and response.

What to Do in the Event You Have a Pet Emergency

In the event of a pet emergency, staying calm and taking swift action is essential. Here’s what you should do if your pet is facing a medical emergency:

  1. Assess the Situation: Quickly determine the severity of the situation. If your pet is in immediate danger, take action right away. If the emergency occurs between 8:00 AM and 5:30 PM, call Wendell Animal Hospital at 919-366-6558. If it is outside of those hours, contact Wake Veterinary Hospital & Urgent Care at (919) 266-9852.
  2. Keep Your Pet Calm: Try to keep your pet as calm and still as possible to prevent further injury. If your pet is in pain or distress, approach them carefully to avoid accidental bites or scratches.
  3. Transport Safely: If your pet needs to be transported to our hospital or another facility, do so carefully. For smaller pets, place them in a secure carrier. For larger pets, use a blanket or a makeshift stretcher to support them during transport.
  4. Bring Any Relevant Information: If your pet has ingested something toxic, bring the packaging or a sample if possible. This can help our team identify the best course of treatment.
  5. Follow Our Instructions: Once you arrive at the hospital, our veterinary team will take over. Follow their instructions carefully to ensure your pet receives the care they need as quickly as possible.
